This week we were introduced to the Assignment 1: Students are invited to explore a topic of their choosing through the creation of a screen-based interface.
Concrete Topic: An educational tool that teaches begginers how to do different mediums of traditional art step by step, based on their submitted images. The website would turn the submitted image into the desired medium through filters
There are an immense amount of programs and apps to create art digitally (Procreate, Photoshop, Paint tool SAI, etc.) as well as many online classes, videos and resources to teach people diverse traditional art mediums. However, while these resources can be very useful and informative for serious artists, they can be somewhat daunting for casual artists who just want to have a relaxing time creating art, without having to dedicate hours of their lives for study and practice.
There are currently no services that do what I intend my app/website to do, but there are a multitude of image editing programs that have art filters such as oil, gouache and watercolour. They even include editing features for brush size, brush lenght, paint amount, etc. That I think will be useful in my app.

My goal for this project
My goal for this product is to give casual and/or inexperienced artists a jumpstart into the art world, giving them step-by-step instructions on how to draw/paint/colour,etc. an art piece, based on an image of their choosing, or even another artwork. The app would analyze the image (colours, lights, shadows, shapes, backgrounds, etc.) and reproduce it in the medium of the users choosing (oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolours, pencils, charcoals, and crayons). It would then break down the piece into easily digestible steps (for example, outline base colours, lights, shadows)
The instructions would include things such as:
1. What colours to mix to create a specific hue, and specific measures (e.g. 1 part Titanium White, 2 pts Burnt Umber).
2. How much/how little product to use for each step (E.g Apply your underpaint thinly to avoid smudgingng in the next steps)
3. Product requierements and possible substitutes. (E.g. For oil paintings, there’s water soluble oil paints which are better for begginers and those in a budget since they don’t require solvents, regular oil paints are more expensive and require the use of possibly harmful chemicals.
4. Manual technique guides: Short videos explaining the specific motions to make to achieve good results. (E.g. apply a thin coat in a sweeping motion)
Extra features that could be included:
1. Brief explanatory videos of the different art mediums and main techniques.
2.Terminology index, for when a user doesn’t understand what a specific word means in their tutorials. (these could be a popup when the user hovers/clicks on the word)
3. Onboarding explanation of all the different tools in the website and how to use them.
4. Ability to edit images once uploaded (E.g. basic edition such as hue, saturation, clarity etc. as well as a way to remove unwanted backgrounds)
5. Since the images uploaded will directly influence the quality of the tutorial provided, a guide for users to submit good quality images.
6. Could be extra but a way to share your results and tutorials with other people so they can do them as well.
